MusiCares and Willingway Hospital are proud to host a discussion on the stigma associated with addiction, and what can de done to alter common misperceptions of what it means to be an addict.
Since most recovery programs offer the principle of anonymity, the world usually only notices the active alcoholic and drug user, not those who have recovered and are now contributive and often highly successful members of society.
And with the media too often spotlighting addicted celebrities who fall from grace, this only enhances the strong stigma still attached to most addictions.
The media, however, can also play an important role in helping to eradicate this stigma if an effort is made to encourage them to produce objective and positive programs, stories and material that better inform and educate the public that alcoholism and drug addiction are treatable diseases that have the potential to afflict anyone.
William G. Borchert, author of “My Name Is Bill W.” and “When Love Is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story” will present. William is also an Emmy-nominated screenwriter and a current Trustee of the Willingway Foundation, as well as director of The Stepping Stones Foundation. Film clips and other examples will be shown to demonstrate the impact that positive messages can have on an individual’s recovery and their extended support network. If you, or someone you love, is an addict this is an evening not to be missed!
